Day 3, June 17, 2015, Welches OR to Kah-Nee-Ta, OR, 66 miles
and 5150 feet of climbing. Today was a
day of contrasts. At departure time it
was a brisk 45 degrees and the few extra pieces of clothing I had on were much
appreciated. By noon it was into the
mid-80’s and hot! Winds were once again
very favorable (Any forecast noting that winds will be out of the W, NW are
always welcome), and the skies were clear and sunny. Right out of last nights accommodations we
began to climb on Highway 26. We began at
1250 feet above sea level and the next 14 miles went up to a peak of 4000 feet. After that we began to descend and with a few
exceptions. It was a tough way to start
the day but towards the end the downhill runs made up for our early morning
pain! The route took us to the base of
Mt. Hood. The hills were covered in lush
vegetation (primarily huge pine trees), there were small creeks rumbling
through the woods and alongside the road, and it was difficult for the sun to
breach the forest canopy. Shortly after
getting around the base of the mountain everything changed and we found
ourselves in the high desert. Gone were
the green trees and rambling brooks.
Immediately everything was brown, dry, rocky and nothing by scrub
trees and brush. It was quite a transition. Mt. Hood was now in our rear view mirrors,
but off to our right was the snow capped peak of Mt. Jefferson and some other
mountains. We went into an Indian Reservation that consisted primarily of open
range but not many cattle. It was very
desolate, but the downhill runs were AWESOME!
Tonight we are staying at another fabulous resort. This one is run by the tribal council and
serves their casino that is just up the road.
It is very nice. I just returned
from a dip in the pool. After dinner I
anticipate turning in early and getting ready for another day on the road!! Talk about “living the dream!”
Riding up to the base of Mt. Hood.
You know it!!
At base of Mt. Hood.
Lots of road construction gave us a chance to rest!!
In the high desert with Mt. Hood in our rear view mirrors.
Mt. Jefferson.
Elevation profile of the day's ride. Each evening we get a cue sheet, map, and elevation profile of the next days ride. Notice that downhill at the end of the ride. It was INCREDIBLE!!!

Looks like an awesome adventure!
ReplyDeleteOh it certainly is!😄
DeleteMr Crane,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted you to know that I am seriously jealous of your adventure! I recently picked up biking, so I am addicted to your blog! Looking at the first climb of your day looks rather intimidating! You must have the quads of a titan! Best of luck to you!
I can see how a day like that would tire you out!! Had a good day here in Michigan. Went to see your Mom & we talked about your trip most of the time. She loves to follow you on the U.S. map that is spread out on her dining room table. If she only had a computer she could follow you on your blog. But in her words she is" way to old for that"!
ReplyDeleteWell Leisa I am on my way to visit Mom today. I have copied and pasted all BLOG entries and PIcs into a Word Document which I will print in color and give to her today - so she will be adequately up to date. :)
